Description
This Roman ring dates from around 300 AD and is in high-carat gold, giving it a wonderfully rich colour. The design, with a flattish oval front, and widely expanded shoulders, is typical of the period. The ring, again typically, is hollow and they were often filled with wax; consequently it cannot be sized. This however is a good sized ring for a man – English size U – USA 10. It is hard to say where in the Roman world this was made, but I bought it in France. It could well have come from there, or from one of Rome’s more Eastern colonies. The front is inset with a well-carved cornelian intaglio of a bearded head, with curly hair, maybe one of Rome’s emperors. It is in excellent condition, and perfectly wearable.
