Usually French, as this one is, dragon or Chimaera brooches and pendants were popular towards the end of the 19th century. They vary greatly in quality, the less expensive examples being die-stamped, and the better examples, such as this one, being cast and chased, usually on the back as well as the front. This is a beautifully cast and chased example, bearing a French control mark for 18ct, the only legal French standard, and an illegible maker's mark (I can just see a letter 'G') on the pendant ring, and has a small old-cut diamond in its mouth. Diameter excluding the suspension ring 1 1/8 inches: 28 mm. Weight 10.04 grams
